Himalayan Institute for Alternatives, in Ladakh (HIAL)

HIAL is an innovative university for training engineers from Himalayan villages to identify local concerns and local resources, and solve problems simply and appropriately. Founded by engineer Sonam Wangchuk (Rolex Innovation Award 2016), their key focus is learning by doing, and integrating research with teaching via "live learning labs".
